Can you care for a stoma at home?

Yes. With the right support, stoma care can be safely and comfortably managed at home. If you need extra help with your stoma care, we’re here for you. Our trained carers can assist with routine stoma care, help monitor for complications and offer emotional reassurance – all from the comfort and privacy of your home.

This depends on the type of stoma (colostomy, ileostomy or urostomy) and type of bag. General guidance is to empty the stoma bag once it’s half full, or more frequently if needed.

Keeping the skin around your stoma clean is key for protecting against infections. We gently cleanse the area with warm water before patting dry. We can also apply protective products if needed.

Stoma care is important for making sure the stoma is functioning properly, that it’s clean and hygienic, and to prevent infection. It generally involves cleaning the stoma, changing the pouch and monitoring the output.

At Visiting Angels, we do stoma care differently. You have the final say in who you invite into your home, which means you can build a relationship with someone who understands your needs, respects your privacy and delivers care with compassion and dignity.
