Rest easy with our overnight home care services

Night-time can be one of the most vulnerable times for someone living alone. Overnight home care provides peace of mind, so your loved one can sleep well, and you can too.

What is

overnight
home care?

Overnight home care involves a carer staying with you in your home through the night. They can be on hand for reassurance and occasional help (known as a sleep-in) or remain alert and awake during their shift for regular or unpredictable needs (known as a waking night). This service is ideal for people who feel anxious at night, need help moving safely in bed, or require support with conditions such as dementia, Parkinson’s or if they’re recovering after hospital discharge.

Your overnight carer can support with:

Mobility Support

Helping you into bed and repositioning to prevent discomfort or pressure sores.

Staying Hydrated

Help with night-time hydration, pain relief, or breathing aids.

Getting ready for Bed

Including helping you get changed, with your skin care and brushing your teeth.

Personal Care

Such as assisting you to the toilet and continence care.

Evening Medication

Medication reminders or administration as per your care plan.

Prepping Breakfast

And tidying up once you’ve finished so you get the best possible start to your day.

Why choose

overnight home care?

For many families, overnight care brings relief from constant worry. You don’t have to stay up all night or be on call; our carers are there, ready to help with whatever the night brings. From repositioning to prevent pressure sores, to supporting hydration or managing medication schedules, our focus is on safety, comfort and continuity of care.

And unlike hospital stays or care home alternatives, Visiting Angels’ overnight support is offered in the place where your loved one feels most secure – their own home.

What can an overnight carer help with?
An overnight carer can assist with a wide range of needs that may arise during the night. This includes help with toileting or continence care, repositioning in bed to prevent discomfort or pressure sores and offering reassurance during periods of confusion or anxiety, something that is especially common with dementia. They can also support hydration, monitor medical conditions and respond quickly if any issues arise. One of the most important things our overnight carers can provide is company and reassurance during some of the loneliest hours of the day.

Overnight care typically covers a shift of around 8 to 10 hours, depending on your needs. We can adjust the timing to fit your routine, whether that’s helping settle in for the night, support throughout, or assistance getting up in the morning.

Sleep-in care involves a carer staying overnight in your home and sleeping lightly, available to assist occasionally. It’s ideal when night-time support is likely but not constant.

Waking night care is more appropriate when someone needs active or frequent support throughout the night. The carer remains awake and alert for the full shift, offering continuous monitoring and hands-on help as needed.

We’re more than happy to advise on the best type of care for you or your loved one if you’re not sure.

Overnight home care offers peace of mind, improved safety, and better sleep for everyone involved. For the person receiving care, it means staying in familiar surroundings with consistent support throughout the night. For families, it brings reassurance that a trained, trusted professional is there when you can’t be.

At Visiting Angels, we understand that inviting someone into your home, especially overnight, is a big decision. That’s why we do things differently. You choose your carer, so you know exactly who’s walking through the door each night. Find out more about why thousands of families choose us for overnight home care services here.
