Who needs catheter care at home?
If you need help managing your urinary catheter, we can be there for you. This service is especially helpful for people with mobility challenges, chronic health conditions, memory loss or those returning from hospital who don’t have experience with using a catheter.
How do you care for a catheter at home?
Caring for a catheter at home involves regularly emptying and monitoring the drainage bag, keeping the area around the insertion site clean, and making sure the tubing is in the right position. Our carers also regularly check for signs of infection or discomfort.
Why is catheter care important?
Proper catheter care reduces the risk of infections, discomfort and blockages, which are some of the most common and serious complications linked to catheter use. Beyond physical wellbeing, our care service is designed to help you feel confident in managing the catheter.
How often should catheter bags be changed?
Leg bags are typically emptied every 3-4 hours or when they are around two-thirds full. Drainage bags are usually changed every 5-7 days, or sooner if there’s a leak or issue. With care support, you’ll have the peace of mind that comes with a consistent routine and an expert on hand to alert your clinical team if someone doesn’t look right.
