Nail care and nail cutting services for older adults

Specialist nail care for the elderly in the comfort of your own home.

What is nail care at home?

As we age, taking good care of our nails can become challenging, yet more important than ever. Overgrown, brittle or difficult-to-reach nails can lead to pain, infections or even falls.

Our nail care service for older adults is a professional, at-home support to help maintain healthy fingernails and toenails. It includes gentle trimming, filing and monitoring for signs of infection and is a great option if you live with conditions like arthritis, diabetes or poor circulation.

Here’s what our vital signs monitoring service includes:

Complete Nail Grooming

Pedicure-style service including nail trimming, filing, cuticle care and cleaning.

Nail Health Inspections

Checking for colour, thickness or tenderness.

Qualified Professional

Delivered by a care provider with nail cutting and care accredited qualifications.

Foot and Hand Refresh

Good Quality Tools

Sanitised before and after every use.

Finishing Touches

Feel refreshed and cared for with optional moisturiser and nail polish.

Why is
nail care importantfor older adults?

Our nails aren’t always top of the priority list when it comes to looking after our health. However, left unattended, neglected nails can be painful and even limit our mobility. As we get older, our skin thins and circulation slows; signs like discoloration, thickening nails or dryness can be signs of deeper issues.

Putting a routine in place serves as a form of light health monitoring, helping to spot health concerns early, make things more comfortable and leave you feeling refreshed and confident.

How often should an older adult cut their nails?

Best practice is to trim fingernails and toenails every 4-6 weeks. Regular trimming helps prevent comfort, stops them from snagging and reduces the risk of more serious issues like ingrown nails or infections, especially for those with reduced circulation or diabetes.

As we age, nails tend to grow slower, thicken and become more brittle. At the same time, our mobility, flexibility, eyesight or grip strength may decline, which makes self-care harder and riskier. This means nail care for older adults is an essential part of any healthcare routine.

Older adults are more prone to issues like fungal infections (onychomycosis), thickened or brittle nails, ingrown toenails, ridges or discolouration. These conditions can cause pain, impact mobility and may signal underlying health problems. Regular nail care can help catch issues early before they get worse.

Nail thickening is a common part of ageing. It’s often caused by reduced circulation, slower nail cell turnover or years of minor trauma (especially to the toes). In some cases, thick nails may also be linked to fungal infections or underlying health conditions. Proper trimming and filing help manage thickened nails and keep them from becoming painful or problematic.

At Visiting Angels, we understand that nail care is personal. That’s why you choose a carer you feel comfortable around. Our carers are fully trained to provide professional nail care services, but beyond that, they’re also kind, genuine people to enjoy spending time with.
