If your loved one already has carers coming in but you’re not happy, you’re not stuck. Families across Maidenhead, Windsor, Slough and the rest of Berkshire switch home care providers more often than you’d think — usually for the same reasons: late visits, a different face every time, or care that feels like someone is just filling the hour.
This guide covers when it’s time to change, how to switch cleanly, and what to look for in a better agency.
Signs it might be time to switch
Trust your gut if several of these sound familiar:
- Visits arrive late, or you’re given a vague sometime this morning” window
- You never know who’s coming through the door
- Carers seem distracted — on their phones instead of helping
- Youre told the package isn’t “worth their time,” or there’s a rigid hour minimum you can’t meet
- Calls to the office go unanswered, or problems don’t get fixed
- Your loved one is anxious before visits, or you’re losing sleep worrying
One bad day happens. A pattern is a reason to act.
What good home care should look like
Before you call anyone new, get clear on the standard you want:
- A carer you meet and approve before care starts
- The same familiar face whenever possible
- Agreed arrival times you can plan around
- Hands-on, person-centred support — not task-ticking
- Live updates the family can see
- Flexible packages that can grow or shrink (including after hospital or when short-term reablement ends)
If your current agency can’t (or won’t) deliver that, it’s fair to look elsewhere.
How to switch home care providers in Berkshire
1. Write down what’s going wrong
Note the dates, times and details of missed or late visits, communication problems and anything that has made your loved one feel unsafe or unsupported. Being specific will help you explain what needs to change.
2. Check your agreement
Most private home care can be ended with notice (often a week or two). Read the contract, or ask the office for the notice period in writing.
3. Book a free assessment with a new agency
A good provider will visit at home, listen properly, and match a carer on personality as well as skills. You should meet and approve who comes into the house.
4. Plan a clean handover
Agree a start date. Share the care plan, medication list, routines, and any risks. A planned overlap of a few days is often kinder.
5. Tell the old agency in writing
Email or letter with the end date. Keep it factual and polite.
