Elderly Care and Support at your own Home this Summer August 2026

☀️ WHY IS ELDERLY CARE AT HOME SO IMPORTANT THIS SUMMER?

For many older people, there really is no place like home. Being cared for in familiar surroundings can help someone maintain their independence, dignity, routines and connection to the people and community they know. The right home care isn’t simply about completing daily tasks — it’s about providing companionship, reassurance, practical support and a friendly face, while helping someone continue living life on their own terms.

🌡️ Extra care is especially important during hot weather.

Older adults are among those at greater risk of becoming seriously unwell during a heatwave. Dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion and heatstroke are important concerns, and hot weather can also make some existing heart and breathing conditions worse. People who live alone or take multiple medications may need additional attention too.

💧 How can we care for older people during a heatwave?

Encourage regular drinks throughout the day rather than waiting until they feel thirsty. Help keep the home cool by closing curtains or blinds in sunny rooms during the day and opening windows when it becomes cooler outside, where safe to do so. Choose light, comfortable clothing and cooler meals, and try to avoid unnecessary outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. Most importantly, check in regularly — particularly with an older person who lives alone.

👀 Know when something isn’t right.

Headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness, heavy sweating and feeling very hot can be signs of heat exhaustion. Someone showing these symptoms should be moved somewhere cool, given fluids and helped to cool down. If they do not improve within around 30 minutes, or develop signs such as confusion, very high temperature, seizures or loss of consciousness, it could be heatstroke and requires emergency medical help.

At Visiting Angels South Hertfordshire, we believe care at home is about much more than assistance. It’s about helping older people feel safe, valued, comfortable and connected — especially when the summer heat makes everyday life a little more challenging.

This summer, remember to check on an elderly relative, friend or neighbour. A glass of water, a cool room, a conversation and a little extra care can make a real difference. 💙💚
