Summer can be a wonderful season filled with sunshine, fresh air, and outdoor activities, but for elderly individuals or those with health conditions, it also brings added risks. As temperatures rise, so does the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and other heat-related health concerns. That’s why keeping safe in summer means putting hydration first, especially for those receiving care at home or living with chronic conditions.

As we age, our sense of thirst becomes less reliable, and our bodies don’t conserve water as well. Certain medications and health conditions – such as diabetes or heart disease – can also increase the risk of dehydration. This makes regular fluid intake essential, even before feeling thirsty. Symptoms of dehydration in older adults can include dry mouth, confusion, fatigue, dizziness, or reduced urination.

To promote elderly care and safety during hot weather, here are some simple but effective hydration tips:

  • Encourage regular sips of water throughout the day, rather than large amounts at once.
  • Offer water-rich foods such as cucumbers, watermelon, oranges, and soups.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol, which can contribute to dehydration.
  • Keep cool, especially during the hottest hours (11am to 3pm). Stay indoors, use fans or air conditioning, and dress in light, breathable clothing.
  • Check in often with elderly loved ones during heatwaves.

If your loved one is living alone, the risk is even greater. Having a care professional check in can offer peace of mind and practical help with daily routines that keep them hydrated and safe.

At Visiting Angels, we understand how important it is to stay safe and well in the summer. Our compassionate carers provide expert care at home, ensuring your loved one is drinking enough, staying cool, and getting the support they need.

Jelly Drops is Visiting Angels UK’s official Hydration Partner. Jelly Drops (backed by the Alzheimer’s society through their Innovation Accelerator programme) are sugar-free water sweets with added electrolytes and vitamins, to be enjoyed throughout the day. They are designed to boost fluid intake for people living with dementia or anyone who struggles to meet their fluid intake each day. They were invented by Grandson and design innovation graduate Lewis Hornby, following his family’s experience when his Grandma Pat was rushed to hospital with dehydration. Living with dementia can exacerbate issues with eating and drinking and make keeping hydrated an extra challenge, particularly during hotter weather.
