Non-Invasive Ventilation Support at Home in Leeds & Wakefield

Living with a condition that needs non-invasive ventilation (NIV) can be a big adjustment, for you and for the people around you. Having trained, reassuring support at home can help you feel safer and more settled. NIV support may be available from Visiting Angels Leeds & Wakefield following an individual assessment. We only consider it with clear instructions from your clinical team, and caregivers receive specific training and are assessed as competent before providing any support. We support people in Leeds, Wakefield and across West Yorkshire, including Horbury, Normanton, Morley and Batley.

How we may be able to help

Every NIV plan is different, so the support we provide is set out individually with you and your clinical team.
Our caregivers never change ventilator settings or make clinical decisions about your ventilation. Those stay with your clinical team.

Depending on your plan, it could include:

Working with your respiratory team

Your respiratory or clinical team stays in charge of your ventilation. Before we agree to support you, we need clear instructions from them about your equipment, your routine and what to do if there is a concern.Caregivers are trained specifically for the support they will provide to you, and assessed as competent before visits begin. If anything changes, or we notice something that worries us, we follow your care plan, whether that means contacting your clinical team, your GP, NHS 111 or the emergency services. Some people also benefit from regular checks of oxygen levels and other observations. You can read more on our vital signs monitoring page.

Arranging NIV support in Leeds & Wakefield

The first step is a conversation with you and your family about your needs. We then carry out an individual assessment and, with your permission, speak with your clinical team to understand your equipment and routine. If we can support you safely, we agree a care plan, make sure your caregivers have received the specific training they need, and only then begin visits. If we are not able to meet your needs safely, we will tell you honestly.
NIV is often started or reviewed during a hospital stay, for example at St James's, Leeds General Infirmary, Pinderfields or Barnsley Hospital. Getting in touch early gives us time to plan support before you come home.

Can you support anyone who uses NIV?

NIV support is considered on an individual basis. We carry out an assessment and need clear instructions from your clinical team, so we can be sure we can support you safely before agreeing a care package.

Will your caregivers adjust my ventilator settings?

No. Caregivers never change settings or make clinical decisions about your ventilation. Those stay with your respiratory or clinical team.

What training do caregivers have?

Caregivers receive specific training for the support they will provide to you, and are assessed as competent before they begin.

What happens if there is a problem during a visit?

Caregivers follow the steps in your care plan. That may mean contacting your clinical team, your GP or NHS 111, or calling the emergency services if it is urgent.
