As we bid farewell to February, Visiting Angels Central Surrey proudly embraced the colour red in support of Heart Month, contributing to the British Heart Foundation’s crucial mission of raising funds for lifesaving research.

In the UK, a staggering 7.6 million people live with heart and circulatory diseases. The ageing population and improved survival rates could elevate these numbers further. Shockingly, more people in the UK live with heart and circulatory diseases than with cancer and Alzheimer’s combined. These conditions account for 27% of all deaths, causing over 170,000 fatalities annually – that’s approximately 480 lives lost every day, or one life every three minutes. Sadly, 49,000 individuals under 75 succumb to heart and circulatory diseases each year.

Unlock a Healthier Heart with These 5 Tips

Tip #1: Nourish with Smart Eating Habits

  • Embrace a colourful plate by incorporating a variety of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fibre.
  • Fuel your body with lean proteins and whole grains to sustain energy and promote fullness.
  • Dodge unhealthy fats, preservatives, and added sugars found in processed and fried foods.
  • Hydrate your body by drinking plenty of water throughout the day to support a healthy lifestyle.
  • Prioritize adequate sleep, as it enhances energy levels and encourages healthier food choices.

Tip #2: Embrace an Active Lifestyle

  • Exercise is a key player in maintaining a healthy heart by managing blood pressure and improving cholesterol profiles.
  • Regular physical activity helps control weight, reducing the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
  • For beginners, gradually introduce activity into your day, like opting for stairs over elevators and walking more.
  • Enjoy the benefits of exercise by going at your own pace, making it an enjoyable routine.

Tip #3: Manage Stress for a Healthy Heart

  • Prioritize mental health, recognizing its significance in overall well-being.
  • Chronic stress can elevate blood pressure, increasing the risk of heart disease.
  • Avoid unhealthy coping mechanisms such as excessive comfort eating or staying inactive during stressful times.

Tip #4: Kick the Smoking Habit

  • Smoking significantly elevates the risk of heart and circulatory diseases.
  • Consider transitioning to e-cigarettes for a less harmful alternative but be cautious of nicotine addiction.
  • Seek professional help for a higher success rate in quitting, utilizing resources from your GP, pharmacist, or local stop-smoking teams.

Tip #5: Moderate Alcohol Intake

  • Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and heart failure.
  • Keep alcohol intake within recommended limits, not exceeding 14 units per week.
  • Monitor your intake by measuring drinks instead of free pouring and inform your friends and family about your commitment to garner their support.
