What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is one of the holiest months of the year in Islamic culture. For Muslims, Ramadan is a time for spiritual reflection and growth. It is a month to help those in need, to spend time with loved ones and to reconnect with God.

In Ramadan, Muslims remember the revelation of the Qur’an and fast from food and drink during the daylight hours and Muslims hope to get close to God by cultivating self-control, gratitude, and compassion for those less fortunate. Individuals who are pregnant, sick, elderly and children are exempt from fasting.

When does Ramadan take place?

Ramadan is the ninth month in the Muslim lunar calendar. A 12-month lunar year consists of approximately 354 days and because the lunar year is 11 days shorter than the solar year, each lunar month moves 11 days earlier each year. The month of Ramadan traditionally begins and ends on the sighting of the new moon.

This year (2022), Ramadan begun on the 2nd April and will end around 2nd May 2022.

Fasting Routines

Muslims usually fast from before the sun rises to when the sun sets, the fast consists between 11-16 hours for a period of 29-30 days. Ramadan is a month and opportunity for self-reflection and spiritual improvement.

Benefits of Fasting

Doctors have agreed that fasting is beneficial for lowering cholesterol levels and for other health benefits. Fasting is supposed to purify the body and spirit.

Eid Ul- Fitr – Eid Mubarak

At the end of Ramadan, Muslims will celebrate Eid ul Fitr, which is called the “Festival of the Breaking of the Fast”. Gifts will be exchanged from parents and relatives.
