Our Caregiver Spotlight for the month is on Angel Caregiver Jess Herman.

Maltby based mum of two,  Jess is a woman of many talents. She has been with us for 2 years and has played multiple roles- Caregiver, Liaison officer and caregiver recruiter. Jess is currently pursuing her foundation degree in Adult Health & Social Care and plans to be a nurse in future.

We got talking with her to know more about her and the work she does.

What did you do before joining Visiting Angels?

I worked in the retail and hospitality sector in customer service. After the pandemic hit, I was one of the staff members that were made redundant. However, that was a blessing in disguise as I applied to Visiting Angels and within 3 days I had a job again. I worked through the pandemic with VA and have been here for 2 years now!

What is a typical day at work like for you?

It varies everyday as no day is the same. Sometimes it depends on the clients mood and how they are feeling, and sometimes it depends on the number of visits I have! My duties as a caregiver range from personal care to companionship, running errands, taking shopping etc.

What do you enjoy the most about being a caregiver?

It is the fact that I am making a difference in someone’s life and lighting up their world.  I love building professional relationships with my clients- Each of them has a different personality and story and its lovely to be a part of their life.

What are some challenges associated with your job?

I would say that the commute between client’s house could be challenging. Sometimes it is a difficult client or a family member but its about finding your way around it, staying professional and delivering the best care and not letting it affect you personally.

What do you like to do outside of work?

I love being out in the nature – specially near water. I also enjoy spending time and doing anything with my kids!

What advice would you give to somebody considering joining Visiting Angels as a Caregiver?

I would say that you should ensure that care is  something that you want to do with passion and not do it just as a job. Go in with an open mind and be adaptable.

Is Visiting Angels different than other care providers?

Yes, a 100%! I have friends working in care homes and other care companies who  are used to going in and out of short visits with no relationships to the clients. I am glad that at Visiting Angels they really we care about the caregivers and clients- so the visit times are longer. This helps us build that connection and relationship, and we are not constantly rushing for calls.

We were thrilled to hear Jess’ comments about us & Thank her for the amazing work she does everyday.
