We got talking to her to know a little more about Emma and her life at Visiting Angels.

How long have you been with Visiting Angels. What did you do before VA ?

I have now been with Visiting Angels for 4 months. Prior to this, I was working as a caregiver with another care provider in Sheffield. I have also worked in  retail for while, then switched to care again as that was my calling . I had this realization when I was caring for my Nan, that care was something I was passionate about!

What is a typical day at work like for you?

I am usually busy from 7am-2pm with different tasks . I am PEG trained so I do deliver care to a client who is PEG fed. Apart from that, I provider personal care and companionship. I once took my elderly client out to a lake for a walk and it was a wonderful experience for the both of us.

What do you enjoy the most about being a caregiver?

I enjoy being able to help people in their own homes because without us, they might end up in a care home without independence.

What are some challenges associated with your job?

The initial training is intense but it is necessary. I could  also be daunting to have patience and to gain the trust of the client.

What advice would you give to somebody considering joining Visiting Angels as a Caregiver?

You need to be patient with your learning and your clients. Delivering personal care is one of the aspects- and sometimes you need to be strong stomached for it. Care is also the most gratifying thing you will ever do.

What do you like to do outside of work for fun?

I sew! When I was 11, I made my own clothes for a vacation to Italy. Apart from that, my partner and I like going to raves and music festivals.

Why is Visiting Angels your employer of choice?

I chose Visiting Angels because of the minimum 1 hour calls that are long enough to give the caregivers and clients time to know each other. It helps me develop a better working relationship with my clients as I am not rushing .

We thank Emma Wilkinson for this candid interview and wish her a long successful career with Visiting Angels.
