Yorkshire Day is observed every year on August 1st to celebrate the largest county in the UK- Yorkshire. Originating as a military holiday, its roots stem from more than a few things, including the day when Yorkshire Soldiers who had fought in the Battle of Minden in Germany picked white roses as tributes to their dead comrades. It is also the day on which slavery was officially abolished, due to campaigning efforts by Yorkshireman William Wilberforce.

Since Yorkshire Day was first observed 1975, the event has grown in popularity and is now celebrated places that consider themselves part of Yorkshire. It is also held to promote the historic region that is God’s Own County.

To celebrate the beautiful county, we talked to a few Yorkshiremen and women to find out what do they like the best about living and working in Yorkshire and some of their favourite spots in the county!

Dan Archer – MD

Surprise View over Hope

Born and raised in the Steel city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire – Dan’s favourite place in Yorkshire is one that you can add to your “Potential Date places” . The spectacular views from the Surprise view point in Hope valley are perfect to watch the sunset or better- stargazing! When asked why does he like living and working in Yorkshire, Dan said- “Because its God’s own County!”

Brian J – Client

Our lovely client Brian is a true blue Yorkshireman! The best thing about Yorkshire are the friendly   ” Yawkshire folks” according to him. As a long distance lorry driver in his youth, he always missed the banter when away.

Kay Radford – General Manager

York Minster, Picture by Jason Wong

“York all the way! I would definitely like living there”, Says Kay. Who does not love the historic city of York? The Tudor houses, narrow lanes and beautiful architecture. Once the Capital city of the county, its now Kay’s favourite place to be. Sheffield born and raised, Kay says that she loves Yorkshire because of the friendly people, and we 100% agree!

Richard Houlden – Accounts Executive

Whitby Port

Born in Dewsbury , lived in Batley and Chapeltown, Richard has been a loyal Yorkshireman. His favourite place in the county is Whitby- the beautiful riverside town for the peace and tranquillity and of course, the fresh fish and chips! When asked what makes Yorkshire his chosen place to live and work, Richard said, ” Its home and there is NO place like home!”

We wish a very Happy Yorkshire Day to everyone celebrating!
