Our Caregiver Spotlight for the month is on Care superhero Sarah Van Hoof. We got talking with her to know more about her and the work she does.
What did you do before joining Visiting Angels & how was it like?
I was a care worker at a different company and the reason I started to look for another job was because the care that we were giving to the clients just wasn’t enough.
I was expected in 15 minutes visits to doing everything from supporting with medication, emptying commodes, changing a client’s pad, getting their dinner ready – it was impossible.
The saddest thing was when I had finished doing everything and the client wanted to talk to me – I couldn’t stay, and I had to run to my next 15-minute call. This was happening day in and day out.
What made you choose Visiting Angels ?
I chose Visiting Angels as I get the time to be with my clients which makes a massive difference to them – they don’t feel rushed in their own homes – but to me as well. Caring is more than just doing all those practical things for a person, it is about sitting with them, having a chat and letting them know that there is someone there who cares about them and their day.
For me having regular clients is fantastic. This has allowed me to build up some fantastic relationships and it is the small things that can make the most difference – like knowing straight away when you enter a client’s house, if they are having a good day and really having the time to do something about it if they aren’t.
What do you love about working in care and Visiting Angels?
My favourite thing about working for Visiting Angels are my clients – I have met some amazing people and I love having the opportunity for them to share their stories about growing up through the war.
My husband’s grandfather lives in London and I have already asked if we have a branch there so if I would be looking for Visiting Angels to care and support a family member that shows what a great company they are to work for.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I love to take part in Roller derby. You can catch me skating away to release stress!
