Caregiver Spotlight – Joan Leitch

Sheffield based Joan Leitch is a multitasker- Mum to a little girl, caregiver and Angel of her client’s lives!

With a vast experience in care spanning 20 years, Joan joined Visiting Angels 06 months ago. Soon into her career with us, she was announced “Caregiver of the month” because of the exceptional care she delivered and the positive relationships she built.

We got candid with her to know a little bit more about Joan and her life at VA!

What did you do before joining Visiting Angels & how was it like?

I have always worked in care. Previously I was at another care company but left because I did not feel appreciated or valued at the place. It soon got demotivating to do a job that I loved so much.

What makes your job at Visiting Angels different than the previous company?

2 months into my job, I was awarded caregiver of the month and I was over the moon for the recognition and admiration I received from the team. This was instantly different from anything I have experienced- working in care so far.

The office team is great and they are very supportive to my needs and requests. All these factors combine to make working in care a job that I love.

What does your work include- as a Caregiver?

Every day brings a different experience and story, but usually I start at 7 am on my first call, dressed  in PPE. Work usually involves greeting, having a chat with the elderly,  reassuring them and being a good listener to their stories. I also deliver personal care and medication as well as moving and handling assistance to those who require it.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

TALKING! I believe that when you talk to someone and get to know them, you build a bond of trust. This is why I love having conversations with my elderly clients, and getting to know them personally . I like to listen to their stories- They always have pearls of wisdom!

What do you like to do outside of work?

I like watching Netflix, while having a glass of wine and relaxing at home with my cats – Tilly and Jack.
