This month the spotlight is on Brooke Jackson!
Having worked in care for 10 years- Brooke brings her vast experience in different roles within the industry to Visiting Angels. The skills , compassion and kindness that she possesses truly portray the values of an Angel.
We got talking to her to know a little more about Brooke and her life at Visiting Angels.
How long have you been working for Visiting Angels. What did you do before VA ?
I’ve been with Visiting Angels for over 2 & a half years now. Before starting my long career in care I worked in in pre-school nurseries.
What is a typical day at work like for you?
I start my morning calls around 7am. It’s my favourite part of the day. I love getting my clients ready and feeling their best. We all know how good it feels to have a nice shower & do your hair, a lot of my clients can’t do these things independently so it’s a joy to help them feel themselves. I work throughout the day & finish at bedtime putting the clients I woke up into bed, by this time we are both ready for a snooze!
What do you enjoy the most about being a caregiver?
I really enjoy it when my clients tell me how I’ve helped them that day. It may be something simple like being there for a chat and a cuppa but to that client it might be the only company they get that day. I want my clients to feel valued and that each one of them matter to me.
What are some challenges associated with your job?
I hate when people assume I just make cups of tea and microwave meals all day. They don’t realise all the medication that’s involved with some clients, the peg feeding, the physio we do, the conversations with doctors/nurses, chasing up prescriptions and appointments.
What do you like to do outside of work for fun?
Outside of work you’ll most likely find me with my dog, Albert. I enjoy swimming/gym & try to go at least 4 times a week. Then at the weekend I undo all my hard work from the gym & go to bottomless brunch!
What advice would you give to somebody considering joining Visiting Angels as a Caregiver?
My advice would be just to go for it, you’ll never regret it. It may be hard work but there’s so many rewards. You’ll laugh hard and you’ll cry but those smiles at the end of the day are worth it.
We thank Brooke Jackson for this candid interview and wish her success in her career with Visiting Angels.
