This month’s spotlight is on Angel caregiver Asam Khan.

Rotherham based, young family man Asam, is a wonderful example to break the stereotype that only women can be good caregivers. Ever since Asam joined Visiting Angels, he has proved time and again that men can thrive in the care industry.

We got talking to him to know a little more about Asam and his life at Visiting Angels.

How long have a you been working for Visiting Angels. What did you do before VA ?

I joined Visiting Angels around 3 years ago. I was not even working in care previously. I worked as a chef, specializing in South Asian cuisine before I decided to venture into care work.

What is a typical day like for you?

Every day is different but the only thing constant is that each day I wake up knowing that I am going to see my second family. My clients are very important to me- typically my work involves getting them out of bed and ready for the day. When lunch time comes around, I cook them food, clean up, administer medicines and have chats with them. I love listening to their stories! I also take them out in the community if they want.

What do you enjoy the most about being a caregiver?

As a caregiver, my ultimate joy and satisfaction is achieved when I know I have put a smile on someone’s face and left a positive impact on them. I enjoy getting kindness back from people. It really does make you feel good when you do good in the community.

What are some challenges associated with your job?

Every job comes with its own set of challenges. As caregivers, sometimes communication can be hard with persons having dementia or any other condition that makes it difficult taking care of them. If you are dedicated to the job and you love it, these challenges will not be a problem, rather a learning opportunity!

There is a stereotype that Care is a female dominated industry which might deter men to apply for it. What are your views about it?

I agree that there are more females in the industry than males however, Care is not dependent on a person’s gender. A man can be as caring as a woman. It is a matter of how dedicated you are to the cause.

Personal care can be daunting in the beginning however, it is the same for any gender. If you put your heart and soul into the job, it is the most rewarding work you could ever do.

What advise do you have for someone considering joining Visiting Angels as a care giver?

I would say come with an open mind and  heart. You will learn a lot and this will possibly be the most gratifying job you’d ever do.

We were thrilled to hear Asam’s comments about working in Care and about Visiting Angels. We Thank him for the amazing work he does everyday.
