Psoriasis is a skin condition in which the body develops flaky patches of skin on the surface- which develop into scales. This happens due to overproduction of skin cells – causing a build up which leads to the patches appearing on the skin.

The severity of Psoriasis varies from a mild discomfort and irritation to  thick scaling, lesions and extreme redness.

These scales and patches can appear anywhere on the body, however the back, elbow, knee and scalp is more prone to the condition.

According to the NHS, Psoriasis affects around 2 in 100 people in the UK. It can start at any age, but most often develops in adults between 20 and 30 years old and between 50 and 60 years old. It affects men and women equally. It  is a long-lasting (chronic) disease that usually involves periods when you have no symptoms or mild symptoms, followed by periods when symptoms are more severe. You can read more about it Here.

Psoriasis awareness month is observed throughout august  to educate and inform people on a range of topics varying from treatment, causes, and management of the condition.

Symptoms of Psoriasis

  • Red skin Patches
  • Dry, Flaky skin,
  • Thick nails
  • Itchy skin surface
  • Stiffness

Diagnosis

Psoriasis can be diagnosed by a dermatologist or your local GP. In some cases, a biopsy or blood test may be required o rule out other conditions.

Treatments

Unfortunately, there is no ultimate cure for psoriasis. There are treatments however, that can improve the symptoms by reducing the inflammation and itchiness. Some of these are topical treatments such as creams or ointments and some are oral medications . Some medical practitioners might suggest phototherapy – which is the exposure of the skin to UVB (ultraviolet B) light.

UVB light therapy has been proven to be an effective treatment option for  psoriasis, and it works by slowing the growth of the affected skin cells.

Manage psoriasis at home

Even though psoriasis could be a difficult condition to live with and there is always a risk involved, you can do your bit to manage the symptoms by :

  • Having a well balanced diet and avoiding foods that cause the flare ups
  • Using a humidifier to keep the air moist. Use the prescribed moisturizers to keep skin soft.
  • Avoid scented products which have drying alcohols in it.
  • Take baths with lukewarm water.
  • Quitting smoking and avoiding alcohol.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight

Many charities and organizations across the country such as The Psoriasis Association and The National Psoriasis Foundation are involved in the efforts to raise awareness about the disease and to raise funds to help those suffering with the condition.
