One in three people with dementia still drives. The most important thing is whether the person can still drive safely. Dementia may affect their ability to do this.<\/p>\n<p>Driving may feel easy and natural for people who\u00a0drive often or have been driving for many years.\u00a0However, it is a complex task that involves quick\u00a0thinking as well as sensory (vision, hearing) and\u00a0manual skills.<\/p>\n<p>A safe driver must use a range of\u00a0mental abilities including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>focus and attention<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 to switch between different driving tasks while \u2018reading\u2019 the road<\/li>\n<li><strong>visuospatial skills<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 to keep the right speed, distance and road position<\/li>\n<li><strong>problem-solving skills<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 to deal with any challenges on the road, such diversions or obstacles<\/li>\n<li><strong>judgement and decision-making<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 for example, to understand and prepare for the actions of other road users<\/li>\n<li><strong>reaction skills<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 to act quickly to avoid an accident<\/li>\n<li><strong>memory<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 for example, to remember a route.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"spacer is-2\">\n<div class=\"content is-fullwidth-extended has-padding-horizontal\">\n<div class=\"container\">\n<div class=\"columns is-centered\">\n<div class=\"column is-6\">\n<p>Being patient and calm also helps people to drive more safely.<\/p>\n<p>As dementia gets worse, it affects these skills even more. This means everyone with dementia will eventually be unable to drive safely.\u00a0How quickly this happens varies from person to person.<\/p>\n<p>Most drivers with Alzheimer\u2019s disease will need to stop driving in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/symptoms-and-diagnosis\/how-dementia-progresses\/progression-alzheimers-disease-dementia\">middle stage of dementia<\/a>. Some types of dementia have\u00a0certain early symptoms that mean an end to driving might be sooner. For example, visual hallucinations are common in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/types-dementia\/dementia-with-lewy-bodies\">dementia with Lewy bodies<\/a>\u00a0and impulsive behaviour is common in\u00a0<a title=\"Learn more about frontotemporal dementia\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/types-dementia\/frontotemporal-dementia\">frontotemporal dementia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"fusion-responsive-typography-calculated\" data-fontsize=\"28\" data-lineheight=\"35px\">Other health conditions that affect driving<\/h2>\n<p>Many people with dementia have other health conditions that may also affect their driving.<\/p>\n<p>Problems with vision and hearing are common in older people, as is arthritis. If this affects a person\u2019s neck, it may reduce their head-turning ability. This can make manoeuvres like pulling\u00a0out into moving traffic much harder.<\/p>\n<p>Some older people also have weaker muscles which can make physical tasks like steering or braking difficult.<\/p>\n<p>Certain medications may also affect a person\u2019s driving \u2013 such as drugs taken\u00a0to help a person to sleep or some drugs for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-dementia\/symptoms-and-diagnosis\/apathy\">depression<\/a>. If the person needs to inform their driver licensing agency about taking these medications, the doctor will advise them of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><a
