Things to Consider before getting Homecare

Choosing home care in Oxford is one of the most important decisions your family will make. This guide covers what the law requires, what good care actually costs, and the questions to ask before you commit.

Choosing Home Care Oxford: Check CQC Registration First

Home care is not just about finding kind, helpful people. The law sets out clear regulations to protect vulnerable people in the community. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) classifies personal care as a regulated activity. This includes help with washing, bathing, dressing, and toileting.

Under the Health and Social Care Act 2008, any organisation providing regulated care in England must register with the CQC. Operating without registration is a criminal offence. The exemption covers private individuals hired directly by the family, but all agencies must register.

Top Tip 1 — verify CQC registration. First, check that any care agency you consider holds a current CQC registration. You can read their inspection reports at cqc.org.uk. New companies may not have a rating yet. However, ask them directly about their governance and quality processes before you proceed.

The True Cost of Quality Home Care

Quality home care costs money. In fact, we have met many families who accepted low-cost care without realising better options existed. The impact on a person’s wellbeing can be serious.

The Homecare Association publishes a minimum price for quality home care based on fair carer pay. Furthermore, local authority funding often falls below this level. As a result, families who rely solely on council-arranged care sometimes receive a lower standard of service than they deserve.

At Visiting Angels Oxford, we pay our carers above the minimum wage. We also reward them with salary increases as they complete training. We believe happy, well-supported carers deliver better care — and our clients feel that difference at every visit.

Questions to Ask Before You Choose

Top Tip 2 — do not decide on cost alone. The agency you choose has a significant impact on your loved one’s daily life. Moreover, a conversation with any potential provider costs nothing. Ask the following before making your decision:

  • Hidden costs — Ask about travel time charges, bank holiday rates, and any additional fees
  • How carers are treated — Ask what support and quality checks the agency has in place
  • Recruitment and vetting — At Visiting Angels Oxford, we require four references and a full DBS check for every carer
  • Training — Ask what training carers receive and how it stays up to date
  • Financial support — Ask your local authority for a care needs assessment. You may qualify for funding. In addition, many families do not realise they have the right to choose their own provider
  • Non-means-tested benefits — Ask about Attendance Allowance and Council Tax Reduction, which can also help with care costs
