Making Aging in Place Possible: How Visiting Angels Supported a Family By providing Care at home

At Visiting Angels Oxford, we offer care at home Oxford families can rely on. This is the story of Roy and Hazel — a couple in their 80s who wanted to stay together in the home they had shared for decades.

Care at Home Oxford: Keeping Roy and Hazel Together

Roy and Hazel have lived in their family home for their entire married life. It is where they feel safe. It is where they feel comfortable. When Roy went into hospital last year, Hazel could no longer manage on her own. The family needed help — and quickly.

Their son Paul lived four hours away. He had no close relatives or friends nearby who could step in. He contacted Visiting Angels Oxford in October to discuss options for his parents.

Trying to look after my parents is a real challenge, and I thought we might have to find a suitable Care Home, which would have mean moving and losing independence. I was lucky enough to find Visiting Angels back in October, who for the past 5 months have supported my parents- initially with taking their medications at the correct times each day and sourcing the tablets from the pharmacy. They help with my parents with shopping lists, cleaning, personal care, hospital appointments and companionship – as well as help them with meal preparation, maintaining their independence.

Staying Connected from 200 Miles Away

Living far from his parents is difficult. Paul needed to stay informed without calling constantly. Our care team sends him daily notes directly to his phone. He can track exactly what happens each day. He stays involved — without adding pressure to his parents.

Age UK notes that most older people prefer to stay in their own home rather than move into residential care. Roy and Hazel felt the same way, and our role was to make that wish possible.

A Second Crisis, a Faster Response

Roy returned to hospital a few weeks later. Paul faced the same difficult choice again — be with his father or ensure his mother was safe at home.

Our care team acted immediately. We arranged additional visits for Hazel. We also organised an overnight carer to stay with her. Paul did not have to choose between his parents. When Roy left hospital, our team collected him and brought him home.

Paul’s Words on Visiting Angels Oxford

We have a fantastic Care Manager, a core team of angels and full support 24/7. The organization that has been ongoing of a high standard became even more outstanding in my second moment of need in the past 6 months. The care team have battled every possible obstacle to keep my parents together at home, safe and supported and maintain their independence for as long as possible, with such treasured memories, I am very grateful to have found them, and for the support my family have received. Visiting Angels are part of our family, it’s just not a job to them. I cannot recommend their support highly enough.
