đź’§ Staying Hydrated in Summer: A Vital Step for Care
As the days grow warmer and brighter, summer brings welcome sunshine—but for many older adults, it also brings a hidden challenge: staying hydrated.
At Visiting Angels, we understand that hydration is about more than water. It’s about comfort, health, and daily routines that help people feel their best—especially in later life. Sometimes, it’s the smallest acts of care that matter most.
Why Older Adults Are More Vulnerable to Dehydration
As we age, our bodies change in ways that can make dehydration more likely—even before we feel thirsty. Many older people don’t naturally reach for a glass of water, especially those living with:
-
Dementia or memory issues, where the habit of drinking may be forgotten
-
Long-term conditions like diabetes or Parkinson’s, which affect fluid levels
-
Reduced mobility, making it harder to get to the kitchen or kettle
-
Medications like diuretics that increase fluid loss
And when someone is mildly dehydrated, the signs aren’t always obvious—fatigue, headaches, dry mouth, or a bit of confusion can all creep in quietly. Left unchecked, it can become more serious, fast.
That’s why regular hydration isn’t just helpful—it’s essential.
How We Gently Encourage Hydration
Our caregivers support hydration in simple, human ways. We don’t lecture or push—we gently encourage. That might mean:
-
Bringing a fresh drink at just the right moment
-
Preparing a light lunch with water-rich foods like cucumber, melon, or strawberries
-
Offering a gentle reminder with a smile: “Shall we have a cuppa before your programme starts?”
One of our clients told us:
“I never think to drink water, but my carer always brings me one—sometimes with a slice of lemon. It’s the little things that make you feel cared for.”
It’s that quiet, thoughtful care that helps make hydration a daily habit.
Easy Ways to Stay Hydrated at Home
Whether you’re supporting a loved one or looking after yourself, here are some helpful tips that are easy to put in place:
đź’§ Keep water close at hand
Leave a jug or bottle by the chair, bedside, or favourite spot—when it’s visible, it’s easier to remember.
🍓 Eat your fluids
Soups, yoghurt, juicy fruits, and jelly are great ways to boost fluid intake without needing to drink more.
🍋 Add a splash of flavour
Low-sugar squash, mint leaves, or citrus slices can make drinks more appealing.
🧊 Cool options for hot days
Ice lollies or chilled herbal teas can feel refreshing and are especially welcome in warm weather.
📱 Use prompts
Gentle reminders—either from a carer, a family member, or even a phone alarm—can help turn sipping into a steady habit.
Compassionate Support That Keeps You Well
Hydration might seem like a small detail—but it has a big impact on how we feel, think, and move. At Visiting Angels, we take the time to notice these details.
Whether we’re helping a client set up drinks around the house, preparing a hydrating meal, or simply encouraging a moment of pause and a cool glass of water, our carers bring attention and compassion to every visit.
It’s how we make sure each person stays safe, comfortable, and cared for—especially during the summer months.
Could Someone You Love Use a Little Extra Help?
If you’re concerned about a parent, neighbour, or loved one who may not be drinking enough, you’re not alone. Dehydration is one of the most common reasons older adults end up in hospital during the summer—but it’s also one of the most preventable.
đź’› A simple check-in from a Visiting Angel can make all the difference.
From companionship to hydration support and gentle reminders throughout the day, we’re here to help your loved one stay well—and give you peace of mind.

Jelly Drops is Visiting Angels UK’s official Hydration Partner. Jelly Drops (backed by the Alzheimer’s society through their Innovation Accelerator programme) are sugar-free water sweets with added electrolytes and vitamins, to be enjoyed throughout the day. They are designed to boost fluid intake for people living with dementia or anyone who struggles to meet their fluid intake each day. They were invented by Grandson and design innovation graduate Lewis Hornby, following his family’s experience when his Grandma Pat was rushed to hospital with dehydration. Living with dementia can exacerbate issues with eating and drinking and make keeping hydrated an extra challenge, particularly during hotter weather.
