Find Friendship and Fitness at Renaissance Gentle Gym in Canterbury

At Visiting Angels North Kent, we believe that reducing loneliness is just as important as providing quality care. That’s why we’re shining a light on local gems in our community—places that offer friendship, purpose, and connection, especially for older adults.

This week, we visited a remarkable place in Canterbury that brings people together through movement, encouragement, and a whole lot of heart…

When I visited Renaissance Gentle Gym in Canterbury, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. I knew it was a gym with a difference—one focused on older adults and gentle movement—but what I found was something much deeper: a space full of laughter, encouragement, and genuine community.

At the centre of it all is Helen, whose warm smile and easy manner make it instantly clear why her clients love coming here. Originally from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, Helen studied physiotherapy in the UK and started work in the public sector. But her real passion? “Helping others – it gives me joy” she told me. And that joy is woven into every corner of the gym.

A Gym Where Everyone Belongs

Helen founded Renaissance Gentle Gym back in 2012, driven by a frustration with how often patients fell through the cracks after hospital treatment—especially following surgery. Limited resources and a lack of continuity left many people without the help they needed to rebuild strength or confidence.

At the same time, traditional gyms weren’t the answer either. “Too individualistic,” Helen said. “People don’t talk to each other. There’s no community.” And for many older people, that lack of connection is a barrier to joining in.

That’s what makes this place so different.

As we walked through the space, I could hear bursts of laughter and the sound of clients drumming on physio balls during a fun upper body workout. Everyone knew Helen by name, and she greeted them in return with real affection. She introduced me to one lively client—just into her 90s—who told me how she attends twice a week, not only for the fitness but to keep her mobility and confidence strong.

Machines That Move With You

The equipment here is quite unlike anything you’d see in a typical gym. The machines are motorised and assistive, designed specifically to support clients’ movements. Whether you want to move the machines yourself or let them guide your body gently, it’s all about working at your own pace and comfort level.

Most members are in their 70s, but ages range from the mid-30s to an impressive 96. Some are referred by local hospitals, while others just want to keep active in a space where they feel safe and supported.

And on Wednesdays, things become even more focused with a dedicated rehabilitation session. These classes are tailored for those using wheelchairs or recovering from strokes, offering one-to-one assistance to help them get the most out of the equipment.

Community, Connection, and Care

It’s clear that Helen doesn’t just run a gym—she creates a community hub. She’s deeply aware of the toll that isolation can take, especially as we age. “Socialisation matters,” she told me, “because without it, people decline—physically, mentally, and emotionally.” She’s especially mindful that those who need help the most are often those who can least access it, and she works hard to ensure that everyone feels welcomed and seen.

Before the pandemic, the gym was busier, and Helen reflects on how much COVID changed people. Many older adults are still more cautious, more isolated. But she remains hopeful, creating opportunities for reconnection wherever she can.

That includes community talks on everything from home safety (with the fire brigade) to personal safety (with local police), and even energy-saving tips from Kent Council. She’s also planning a creative workshop soon—another way to bring people together and lift spirits.

More Than Exercise—It’s a Place to Be Yourself

Spending time at Renaissance Gentle Gym reminded me of how essential these kinds of spaces are—especially for older adults who want to stay active, independent, and socially connected. It’s not about pushing limits or chasing fitness goals. It’s about gentle movement, shared laughter, and belonging.

Whether you’re recovering from an operation, managing a long-term condition, or simply looking for a place where you can move and connect at your own pace, Renaissance Gentle Gym is a rare and special find in Canterbury.

Helping You Stay Connected—In the Way That’s Right for You

Spaces like Renaissance Gentle Gym show just how powerful community and connection can be. But we also understand that not everyone finds it easy to get out and get involved—and that’s where we can help.

At Visiting Angels, we offer one-to-one support at home that’s built around dignity, kindness, and your individual needs. Whether it’s companionship, help with personal care, or more complex support such as dementia or palliative care, our caregivers are there to help make life not only manageable—but meaningful.

Sometimes that means a gentle hand at home. Sometimes it’s a friendly face to accompany someone to a local club or activity. However you want to stay connected, we’re here to help.
