💙 It’s not just a wellbeing centre. It’s a community.
In the heart of Sandwich, where narrow lanes and historic buildings line the streets, there’s a space filled with kindness and care.
Walk into Age Concern Sandwich, and you’ll find more than a café. You’ll find a place where older people are part of something bigger. Somewhere they’re welcomed, recognised, and gently supported to stay connected to life.
A view from the heart
Upstairs, overlooking the café, we met Ben Garrett, the centre’s CEO, and his calm companion Violet, who quietly keeps watch from her favourite spot.
Ben told us that there are over 600 service users per week—supported through meals, dementia care, wellbeing services, and day-to-day connection. “It’s about helping people hold on to independence,” he said. “But also about joy.”

Comfort food and quiet companionship
In the café below, the food is hot, hearty, and made fresh each day—but what really fills the space is conversation and connection. It’s where people come to feel part of something again.
For those who can’t make it in, the Meals on Wheels team brings that same warmth to the doorstep—often with the only friendly face someone sees that day.

Small services, big impact
From bathing support and haircuts to chiropody and hearing aid clinics, the centre helps with the everyday things that matter most.
Their Sunflower Centre also supports people living with dementia—offering a calm, engaging space and a welcome breather for family carers.

How Visiting Angels supports people at home
At Visiting Angels, we help people stay independent in the comfort of their own homes—with care that’s consistent, unhurried, and built around the person.
Some people come to us for help with personal care or managing health needs. Others want companionship—someone to walk beside them or ease the journey back into community life.
For many, it’s the difference between facing the day alone and having something to look forward to.
Not sure where to start? A single chat with a Visiting Angel can gently open the door to what’s next—no pressure, just options.
Building a community of support
While Age Concern Sandwich and Visiting Angels work separately, we share a similar aim: to help older people live full, connected lives—both at home and in the wider community.
Whether it’s a hot lunch, a familiar companion, or support with daily care, there’s help available—and it’s often closer than we think.
Age Concern Sandwich is open weekdays
