So does a carer working the moorland villages around Wincle, Meerbrook and Longnor, where winter access is a genuine planning problem rather than an inconvenience.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The practical consequence is that a quote for Buxton and a quote for Handforth are not really comparable, and neither is a national average.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>What makes the number go up?<\/b><\/h3><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Visit length.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Short visits cost more per hour, because travel is spread across less time. This is why some providers price a half hour call at more than half the hourly rate.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Timing.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Early mornings, evenings, weekends and bank holidays usually carry a premium.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Two carers.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If a hoist or a double-handed transfer is needed, the visit is charged at two carers.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Complexity.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Care needing specific training, such as advanced dementia or complex conditions, is priced above companionship.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Notice.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Same-week starts and short-notice changes can cost more with some providers.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Why the cheapest quote is usually the wrong one<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Homecare Association calculates the minimum price a provider needs to charge in England in 2026\/27 to cover the National Living Wage, travel time, training, holiday pay and cover. That figure is <\/span><b>\u00a334.42 an hour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Below it, something is being left out.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same body puts the average rate councils actually pay providers at <\/span><b>\u00a324.39 an hour<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That gap of roughly ten pounds is the whole reason fifteen minute visits exist, and it is why a carer on a council-commissioned round may be unpaid for the time spent driving between calls.<\/span><\/p><p><b>So a quote well under \u00a334 an hour is not a bargain, it is a signal.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ask what is being paid to the carer, whether travel time is paid, and what the minimum visit length is. A live-in carer needs proper breaks and uninterrupted sleep, so someone who genuinely needs attention through the night usually needs waking night cover or two carers, which is priced differently again.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>What about the council rate?<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the council funds all or part of someone&#8217;s care, it pays its own commissioned rate rather than the private rate, and it will usually only pay providers it holds a contract with.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a route round that. A direct payment lets someone take the money and arrange care themselves, including with a provider the council does not contract with, topping up privately if they want a service that costs more than the council&#8217;s rate.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum charge and the exact rates differ by council, so check the relevant charging policy: Cheshire East Council on 0300 123 5010, Call Derbyshire on 01629 533190 for Buxton and Whaley Bridge, and Staffordshire Cares on 0300 111 8010 for Leek, Biddulph and Kidsgrove.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Things that reduce what you actually pay<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before comparing hourly rates, deal with these, because they can be worth more than the difference between two providers.<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Attendance Allowance<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u00a376.70 or \u00a3114.60 a week from April 2026. Not means-tested, not taxed, no savings limit.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Council Tax disregard<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, worth 25 per cent of the bill or the whole thing, where someone is certified as severely mentally impaired and gets a qualifying benefit.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Free reablement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for up to six weeks after a hospital stay, arranged through the NHS or the council. Plenty of families start paying privately on the day of discharge without being offered it.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>A care needs assessment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is free and a legal right under the Care Act 2014 regardless of savings.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><h3><b>Frequently asked questions<\/b><\/h3><p><b>How much does home care cost per hour in the UK?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roughly \u00a326 to \u00a338 an hour (homecare.co.uk, 2026), with regional variation. In Macclesfield the average is around \u00a335 and across Cheshire East around \u00a339 (Lottie, September 2026).<\/span><\/p><p><b>Why will nobody give me a price on the phone?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually because the rate depends on visit length, timing and complexity, and sometimes because the provider would rather discuss it after a visit. It is reasonable to ask for the standard hourly rate, the minimum visit length and any weekend or evening premium before anyone comes out.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Is a cheaper provider always worse?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not always, and a rate well below the \u00a334.42 sustainable minimum should prompt questions rather than celebration. Ask what the carer is paid, whether travel time is paid, and what the shortest visit is.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Do I pay for the carer&#8217;s travel?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not as a separate line with most providers, because it is built into the hourly rate. That is exactly why the rate has to cover it, and why very low rates tend to mean unpaid travel time for the carer.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Can I pay for a few hours a week to start?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, and it is a sensible way to begin. What matters more than the number of hours is which hours, because a visit at the time of day things actually go wrong is worth more than the same hour at a convenient time.<\/span><\/p><p><b>Does the price go up if needs increase?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The number of hours usually goes up, and the rate may change if two carers or specialist input become necessary.
